frequently Asked Questions
Below are quick answers to common questions about the offer and bargaining process, along with a glossary of important terms.
About the Proposal
-
The proposal provides competitive compensation and benefits while supporting job security and labor stability as U. S. Steel continues to invest and grow through our partnership with Nippon Steel. For more information, please visit the Our Proposal page.
Understanding the Negotiations Process
-
Negotiations take place between U. S. Steel and the USW.
When U. S. Steel and the USW reach a tentative agreement, a Tentative Settlement Agreement is reached, which may be subject to review and ratification by union members under union procedures. If an agreement isn’t reached right away, U. S. Steel will continue bargaining in good faith to reach a successor agreement.
You can visit the Our Proposal page to see more details on all steps of the bargaining process and where things currently stand. -
U. S. Steel and the United Steelworkers (USW) have mutually agreed to extend the current Basic Labor Agreements beyond their scheduled expiration at 12:01 a.m. ET on September 1, 2026. This means the current agreements will remain in effect as bargaining continues.
-
U. S. Steel will negotiate directly with the USW. Nippon Steel will not be directly involved with negotiations with the USW.

-
The Ratification Bonus will be paid within 30 days after a new contract with the USW is ratified.

Employees in their Probationary Period will receive the Ratification Bonus after working 1,040 hours.
-
“Eligible employees” are those accruing Pension Service as defined by the Pension Agreement. This includes employees who have completed their probationary period and are either active or have been inactive for less than two years since their last day worked.
