U. S. Steel Statement: Company announces it has begun Collective Bargaining negotiations

U. S. Steel has presented the United Steelworkers (USW) union with an initial proposal for a new five-year labor agreement. The offer provides competitive compensation and benefits while supporting job security and labor stability as U. S. Steel continues to grow through its new partnership with Nippon Steel.

This proposal is intended to build on our legacy of excellence and provide our represented employees with a strong, predictable foundation for the future. The proposal includes:

  • A total wage increase of approximately 18.2%* over the course of the contract.
  • No changes to the Carnegie Pension Plan or Steelworker Pension Trust.
  • No changes to the way profit sharing is calculated and its uncapped opportunity.
  • Upon ratification, all eligible employees will receive a $4,000 bonus.

*Compounded average over 5 years

During the course of bargaining, the Company will make additional proposals regarding benefits and other terms and conditions of employment.

We will continue discussions in-person this week, followed by a planned two-week bargaining period from July 27th to August 7th, where teams will meet locally to review and discuss proposals. The U. S. Steel and USW bargaining teams are expected to return to Pittsburgh on August 10th for additional in-person negotiations.

Throughout this process, our focus remains on operating safely and productively while helping execute the significant investments that will keep us at the forefront of steelmaking and sustain good paying jobs in the communities in which we operate.
